2020 Softball Coaches Needed

South Windsor Little League is a volunteer based organization that depends heavily on parents to help make the player's Little League softball experience memorable, fun and rewarding. We are always looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help support the softball program in any capacity that they can, however this year we are specifically in need of coaches for both Minors softball divisions. Please contact the Softball Director if you are interested. All Little League volunteers are required to complete a background check form prior to working with the players.

2020 Spring Softball Program

The South Windsor Little League offers fastpitch softball for girls between the ages of 7 and 12. The spring softball program for 2020 will consist of three levels of play (Minors AA, Minors AAA and Majors) as described below. Eligibility for each division is dependent on a player’s softball age and experience. Softball age for the 2020 spring season is a players age as of 12/31/2019.

Minors AA Softball (Ages 7-9):

The Minors AA softball division is open to girls from softball age 7 to 9. This level is a coach pitch division meant to transition younger players to softball. Players will learn the basic skills of hitting, fielding, throwing, base running as well as being introduced to the rules of fastpitch softball for the first time. An eleven-inch softball, sixty-foot base paths and a thirty-five-foot pitching distance will be utilized for this level. Teams will play other local towns so some travel is required. Typically, teams will play or practice a maximum of three times per calendar week.

Minors AAA Softball (Ages 9-11):

The Minors AAA softball division is open to girls from softball age 9 to 11. While the emphasis is still on basic skill development, this level is more competitive then the Minors AA division with pitching being a combination of player and coach pitch. An eleven-inch softball, sixty-foot base paths and a thirty-five-foot pitching distance will be utilized for this level. Teams will play other local towns so some travel is required. Typically, teams will play or practice a maximum of three times per calendar week.

Majors Softball (Ages 10-12):

The Majors softball division is open to girls from softball age 10 to 12. This level is more advanced then the Minors AAA division and the full Little League softball rules apply. All games are pitched by players (no coach pitch). Players will learn advanced hitting, fielding and base running. A twelve-inch softball, sixty-foot base paths and a forty-foot pitching distance will be utilized for this level. Teams will play other local towns so some travel is necessary. Typically, teams will play or practice a maximum of three times per calendar week.

2020 Softball Player Evaluation & Team Placement

Online registration for the 2020 spring softball program will begin in November with player evaluations held in March. Player evaluations are necessary to determine league placement and to help in drafting teams that are evenly balanced. Evaluation requirements are as follows:

  • Players that are softball league age 7 or 8 are not required to participate in the evaluation process and will be automatically assigned to a Minors AA softball team by the league.
  • Players that are softball league age 9 are required to participate in the evaluation process. Players that are not drafted onto a Minors AAA softball team will be automatically assigned to a Minors AA softball team by the league.
  • Players that are softball league age 10 or 11 are required to participate in the evaluation process. Players that are not drafted onto a Majors softball team will be drafted to a Minors AAA softball team.
  • Players that are softball league age 12 are required to participate in the evaluation process and will be drafted onto a Majors softball team.

All players registered for softball will be contacted by the league through email in February with the evaluation schedule and details. This information will also be posted on the website when it becomes available. Players who register after the evaluations / draft may be accepted into the league, however it will be on a case by case basis and solely dependent on roster availability.
